Shifting Gears

by Choa Fung Fung

At 18, Yubak Lama is already a cycling champion. In 2018, the boy from a village in Dhading beat 10 paracylists to win the National Paralympics games.

But his journey has not been easy.  Six years ago, before Dashain, he had a bus accident on his way home. Flung out of the bus, Yubak was crushed under the vehicle, and his left leg had to be amputated as a result.

With the encouragement of his sister, cousins and friends, Yubak picked up cycling. After 18 months, he began to commute daily to his school on his bicycle. Recently, he even cycled 50 km to Dhading to meet his father. Now, Yubak gets invited to junket cycling trips and has even been offered sponsorships. He is passionate about working for his community and aspires to be a para-cycling champion in the future.
