The Faithful Mender

In a narrow shop barely two shoulders wide, Ali Khan, 55, plies his trade. For the last 40 years, he has been filling up flat tyres, and mending punctured ones, along Kalimati road.

A devout Muslim, Ali prays five times a day. His daily life revolves only around two things: work and religion. Very often, he only closes shop late into the night. His eldest son has come from Birgunj to help him, but Ali continues his hands-on approach. He believes a good Muslim is also a hard worker.

Recently, there is much less traffic on the roads due to the fuel crisis in Nepal. Business has declined, and the shortage of cooking gas has made daily life more unbearable. But Ali soldiers on with faith.
