In His Shoes

At the age of 15, Krishna left his village for Kathmandu, in search of a better life. He became an apprentice to a shoemaker.

Three years later, he completed his learning and started making his own shoes. He worked hard six days a week in a small factory. He wasn’t a rich man, but for 13 years, the shoes he made supported his family.

This year, a massive earthquake struck Nepal. His village was destroyed and his wife and baby are now living in a temporary shelter. Although Krishna wishes to be with his family, he has to work even harder to help rebuild the home they have lost.

Hemanta Shrestha is a professional photojournalist for Kantipur publications in Nepal.He studied advanced photography under Dr Roudiger Claus specialising in journalism, and aesthetics in photography with Norwegian photographer Morten Krogvolt. He has worked consistently in commercial magazine photography as well as news, and as a photography workshop instructor for the School of Creative Communications in Nepal. He is also a stringer for the European Pressphoto Agency and has exhibited his images in Kathmandu.
