In Tibetan Buddhism, it is believed that holy men are reincarnated many times throughout history, to guide humankind towards salvation.

The 9th reincarnated Kyabgon Jedrungpa was enthroned in Kathmandu on 3 November 2015. He is regarded as a great Buddhist master, and considered the emanation of the great Tibetan King Songtsan Gampo.

As a Sherpa, I have been raised in the ways of Buddha. But reincarnation – the belief that the soul passes on to a new body after death – befuddles me.

During his inauguration, thousands of worshippers lined up to make offerings and receive blessings. It was a big day for believers of Tibetan Buddhism.

I had a rare chance to spend two days with the reincarnated Kyabgon Jedrungpa. Great care has been take to educate and protect the Rinpoche.

Despite his holy status, he seemed to me like any other eight-year old boy, who believes in superheroes and loves cartoons.

But who knows what the future holds?
